Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
At Redlands Primary School, we understand that the early years of a child’s life are the foundation for all future learning. Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision offers a warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment where children aged 3-5 begin their exciting educational journey.
We are proud to provide a rich and engaging curriculum that meets the diverse needs of our children, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. Through carefully planned indoor and outdoor activities, we support every child to grow in confidence, develop resilience, and build positive relationships.
The Four Key Principles of the EYFS
Our provision is built around the four guiding principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework:
- The Unique Child – Every child is valued as an individual with their own strengths, interests, and ways of learning.
- Positive Relationships – Strong relationships between staff, children, and families are at the heart of our provision, supporting each child to feel safe, secure, and ready to learn.
- Enabling Environments – Our learning environments are thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity and encourage exploration, both indoors and outdoors.
- Learning and Development – We provide a balanced curriculum that nurtures each child’s academic, personal, and social growth.
Learning Through Play
Children are naturally curious and learn best through play. At Redlands, we offer a wide range of carefully planned, purposeful play opportunities that allow children to explore, discover, and develop key skills. Our engaging provision encourages children to make choices, solve problems, and build independence while being supported by experienced and caring staff.
Inclusive and Individualised Learning
We are a fully inclusive school where every child is supported to reach their full potential. Our skilled staff tailor learning experiences to meet individual needs, ensuring all children—regardless of ability or background—make excellent progress. We celebrate every achievement and encourage independence, teamwork, and curiosity, fostering a strong sense of pride and belonging.
Our EYFS Curriculum
Our Early Years curriculum is designed using the EYFS Framework and Development Matters guidance to ensure that children develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. We focus on learning through playing and exploring, active learning, and creative and critical thinking, providing the ideal foundation for lifelong learning.
Our curriculum covers the seven areas of learning and development, ensuring that children gain a broad and balanced early education:
Prime Areas:
- Communication and Language – Developing speaking, listening, and understanding skills.
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development – Building relationships, confidence, and emotional resilience.
- Physical Development – Enhancing fine and gross motor skills and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Specific Areas:
- Literacy – Encouraging a love of reading and developing early writing skills.
- Mathematics – Building a strong foundation in number and problem-solving.
- Understanding the World – Exploring the world, cultures, and communities.
- Expressive Arts and Design – Inspiring creativity through art, music, movement, and imaginative play.
A Curriculum Tailored to Our Pupils
Our curriculum is carefully planned to reflect the unique needs and interests of our children at Redlands. We provide meaningful learning experiences that capture children’s imagination while supporting their development in all areas of learning. This ensures they are well-prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1 and beyond.
